Fostering Superb Alpacas and Alpaca Clothing

Welcome to Big Horn Mountain Alpacas located in the rolling green foothills of the wild and scenic Big Horn Mountains of Wyoming.  Established in 2005, our ranch strives to raise healthy, content alpacas with great fiber.  Our fiber is processed on site, including handshearing the animals ourselves, which not only makes sense environmentally, but also keeps the cost low for the buyer of our products.  The alpacas are sheared by Mariann using hand shears while standing which minimizes stress.  Our ranch is a family run business.   The herd is visited at least twice a day for feedings, fresh water, clean up and lots of attention.  In addition to keeping our animals current with vaccines, nail trimmings and worming, as a small ranch we take advantage of the opportunity to check on the well being of each and every animal at every feeding.  Our alpacas are acclimated to horses, dogs, chickens and our guard burro who roam the acreage.  We also sell a variety of alpaca clothing, assessories, with one of our top sellers being our unique handfelted western hats which are sold around the country and carried in fine western stores.  Take a look at our ranch store on this website to see what these great fiber animals produce.  With fiber as soft as cashmere, warmer than wool, environmentally sound, hypoallergenic and in 22 natural colors, alpaca clothing makes a great gift for someone else or for yourself.

Welcome SummerRain and Snow White

During a July 2009 downpour, our alpaca herd increased to 11 with the birth of SummerRain.  She is a soft and friendly dark fawn cria, the offspring of our own Aurigan and JC Studlee.

The photo to the right shows our newest Angora Rabbit addition coming from the well known Bungalow Farm in Sacramento.  Snow White, a German Angora Rabbit doe arrived via airlines in January 2010.  We looked for the best rabbit to bring in to improve our herd and we think we found her.  Snow White is just 10 weeks old in the photo with Maria, and already had her first shearing.  In the photo Maria is wearing a scarflette from Snow White's fiber.

About Alpaca
Alpacas are members of the camelid (camel) family.  They are indigineous to the Andes Mountains and are raised and sheared yearly for their luxurious soft and warm fiber.  Alpaca fiber is a rare speciality fiber.  Alpaca is valuable because it combines so many positive attributes into one fiber.  It is found naturally in 22 colors, is unusually strong and resilient, has great thermal capacity, is extremely soft to the touch comparable to cashmere, is hypoallergenic, and is fire resistent.  Alpaca garments do not need dry cleaned and are easy to care for.  In 1984 the first alpacas were imported, and now alpaca, though still rare,  is more readily available for all to enjoy.
